If you have ever suffered with knee pain then the following may sound familiar….
….pain when your going up or down the stairs, a sharp pain when you are getting up off a chair, tired and sore knees after standing for a long time or just a general ache at the end of the day that can leave you feeling tired and frustrated.
If you have experienced these things then don’t worry, as you are not alone.
Knee pain is one of the most common complaints that patients come into my clinic with.
A lot of people think that it is something that comes with old age or that it runs in the family but this does not have to be the case.
It can be very frustrating as sometimes your knees can feel great one day and the next, they can be sore and achy for no apparent reason.
But probably the most frustrating thing can be just w hen you think your knees are getting better, the pain can return as soon as you try to do some form or activity or something physical.
Why does this happen?
Let’s at 5 common reasons why.
5 Reasons Knee Pain Can Last Longer Than It Should
1 – You Tried To Rest It – which may have helped initially and eased the pain, but as soon as you returned to activity the pain returned. This is because rest will only reduce the symptoms but not the reason behind the symptoms. This may be coming from an imbalance or restriction in your ankle or hip or perhaps one leg is compensating for your other leg.
2 – You were prescribed painkillers or anti-inflammatory gel: Again, these can lure you into a false sense of security as they can ease your pain and your knee can feel better for a while, but when you stop taking them, the pain can just return. Why? because painkillers address the pain, which is the symptom and don’t address the reason behind the pain.
3 – You tried exercises from Youtube – There is lots of information available out there on knee pain and if you look up Youtube you’ll find a range of exercises to help relieve knee pain. The only problem is that these exercises will not be specific to YOUR needs and you can waste time and energy doing exercises that can have no effect or may in fact make your problem worse.
4 – You went for a rub or sports massage – and you thought that this would cure it and sometimes a massage can really help. But again, when you return to activity, there is a strong chance that the pain will come back because the true stressors have not been addressed. The massage will help with the feeling of tight or achy muscles, but will not address the reason why those muscles are becoming tight and achy in the first place.
5 – You tried wear a knee support and thought it would solve it – Again, the knee support may help your knee feel less painful for a short while and you find it feels more stable. But this will only work for a certain amount of time and long-term, will not give the solution you are looking for.
So, where to next?
If any of these reasons sound familiar to you and you still have knee pain, where do you go next?
The answer is not to do more of the same thing, because if it hasn’t helped by now, what is point of doing more of it.
The solution can often lie in not just looking at the area that is sore (i.e your knee). Very often, your knee pain may be reacting to some other imbalance elsewhere, be it a poor or inefficient movement habit that has developed from a previous injury elsewhere or from repetitive strains over the years.
These inefficient movement habits can place extra pressure around the knee joint and unless it is addresses, your pain will always return when you do anything active or somewhat physical.
