Why your body can feel achy in the morning?

It’s not uncommon for people to wake up feeling achy and stiff in the morning. Why does this happen when the reason behind why we sleep is for us to rejuvenate and wake up feeling fresh.

Its common knowledge that we should be getting at least 7 hours hours sleep per night for adult. However a lot of people may not know the importance of good quality sleep and this can be a very underrated part of training, recovery and general good movement. If you are not getting into proper deep sleep then your body may not be recovering the way it needs to from the activities of the day and you can wake up feeling achy.

If you wake up feeling stiff and sore and have not done excessive exercise the day before then the chances are you will not have had a very restful sleep. Ideally we want to be fully relaxed before going to sleep so your nervous system can be a rest and digest state. When this happens your diaphragm functions well and moves well. When it does not happen then one of the first things we can do in the morning is get your diaphragm moving well again and mobilise it for the day ahead. 

I use some simple breathing exercises that vary from easy to demanding and they are a great way to shorthen and lenghten your diaphragm and intercostal muscles between your ribs. This in turn will lead to better movement in your lower back.
