Why We Don’t Just Focus on Pain Relief

When someone comes to our clinic with a problem, one of the first things we will ask them is “Are you looking for short term pain relief or do you want to find a LONGER LASTING solution to your problem?”

If they are just looking for short term pain relief, then that is fine, but we need to we establish this at the beginning. The reason we like to establish this is because we always let the person know that there is another option apart from just pain relief.

There is the option to get a long lasting solution so that you can get back to doing the things you love to do, such as playing golf, picking up the kids, walking the dog, or going back to your circuit class in the gym without the problem re-occurring.

Once we establish what the patient wants at the start of the session we can then get going with their plan of care.

Pain relief is, of course, part of the plan and anyone who comes to see us will normally have some form of pain and will be looking for relief.  However, there is a reason why I don’t just focus on relieving the pain and I will explain it below.

More than just pain relief.

If your goal is to be able to get back to doing the activity or thing that you love doing, WITHOUT pain and restriction constantly getting in the way, then we can’t just focus on relieving the pain.

A common thing that I hear people say is that they went for a back massage because their back was sore and they felt great afterwards. But then the pain returned the next day when they went back to work. How can this be?

The reason, is because pain is not an accurate measure of the problem and more importantly, not an accurate measure of when the problem is resolved.

Remember pain is just a symptom and there will nearly always be a true cause or stressor behind the pain.

In order to get long lasting results the true stressor of the problem must be addressed and then there needs to be a progression of exercise and rehab movements that strengthen and build resilience.

This is needed  so that you can cope with the stresses and pressures that are thrown at you on a day to day basis.

You Decide The Outcome

At Midlands Physical Therapy we let you decide the outcome. Are you happy with just getting some pain relief or have you already tried that, found out that it doesn’t solve the problem and want more.

We can both. If it pain relief you want then that’s fine. But if you want to be rid of the pain for a longer time, if you want to be able to run for the rest of the year without problems, if you want to be able to walk the beach every weekend this summer without a nagging hip pain ruining the sunset, then you need a plan that is going to focus on getting that long lasting solution and that ideal outcome.
