Your first appointment

Know what to expect before you arrive

Your first visit is a chance to explain what has been happening, receive a thorough assessment and agree the most useful next step.

Your initial assessment

A clear five-step process

Your physiotherapist will listen, assess, explain and begin a plan based on what you need to return to.

01

Understand your story

Discuss how the problem began, previous injuries or stresses, how it affects life and what you want to achieve.

02

Identify contributing factors

Assess relevant movement, range, strength and physical findings, then put those together with your history.

03

Move more, hurt less

Begin with suitable hands-on treatment, movement and pain-management advice to make daily activity easier.

04

Build solid foundations

Develop mobility, strength and stability so your body can meet the demands of home, work or the gym.

05

Move with confidence

Progress towards more challenging positions, speed, direction changes and the activities you enjoy.

Following an online exercise programme at home

After the appointment

Remember your plan at home

Where appropriate, exercise videos can be sent after the session so you can review the movements on your phone, tablet or computer.

What should I wear?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move and lets the relevant area be assessed. Shorts are useful for a lower-body problem; a vest or sports top can help with a neck, shoulder or back assessment. We explain what is needed and ask for consent before any assessment or treatment.

What should I bring?

Bring any relevant referral letters, reports, scan results and a list of medications if appropriate.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on the nature and duration of the problem, your current fitness, the outcome you want and how the problem responds. After the assessment, your physiotherapist can explain the plan and give a more useful estimate.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Responses vary. Some people feel immediate relief, while others notice temporary tenderness after movement or hands-on treatment. Treatment is adjusted to your comfort; contact the clinic if you have an unexpected or concerning reaction.

Is parking available?

Free on-street parking is available outside and near the clinic. The area can be busier around school finishing time, so allow a little extra time for an afternoon appointment.
